The Office of Strategic Services or OSS was the forerunner of
the U.S. Army Special Forces (USSF) and the Central Intelligence
Agency (CIA). The OSS was formed during World War II to provide
the United States with an organizaton that could perform
intelligence and unconventional warfare operations in all
theaters of the war.
One of its units was called "Detachment 101". This unit
served in the China-Burma-India (CBI) theater conducting
long-range reconnaissance and special operations. On
April 14, 1942 (1), Detachment 101 was activated for service in
Asia. It was formed under the Office of the Coordinator of
Information (COI) just weeks before the COI became the Office of
Strategic Services (OSS).
