1st Special Forces Group

1st SFGA was first activated on June 24, 1957 and then, at the conclusion of the Vietnam War, inactivated on June 28, 1974. It was again reactivated on September 4, 1984.

Basing. 1st SFGA is based at Joint Base Lewis-MChord (JBLM), Washington. It has a forward deployed battalion at Tori Station, Okinawa, Japan.

Conflicts. The group has taken part in the Vietnam War, Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan), Operation Iraqi Freedom (Iraq) and Operation Enduring Freedom (Philippines).

Vietnam. 1st SFGA was involved in Vietnam very early in the war, with detachments deployed from 1957 until the mid-1960s. Many of its teams would deploy to Vietnam on six month rotations.

Hait. During the Operation Uphold Democracy teams from 1st SFGA would deploy along with other mulit-national forces (i.e. Pakistan) as a Coalition Support Team (CST).

Philippines. 1st SFGA provided the bulk of the teams and personnel for the conduct of unconventional warfare in the Philippines starting in February 2002. During this extended time frame 1st group teams trained up members of the Philippine armed forces, condcuted numerous MEDCAPs, and provided operations and intelligence fusion temas to actively assist the Armed Forces of Philippines to target terrorist cells.

Iraq. 1st group has deployed its battalions on several rotations during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Afghanistan. 1st group has deployed its battalions and companies numerous time in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.

Special Action Force (SAF). At one time, the 1st SFG was the nucleaus of the Special Action Force for the Pacific area. Other units augmented 1st SFGA such as medical, intellligence, medical, and engineer.

400th ASA SOD. The 400th SOd was assigned to the 1st Special Forces Group in late 1960. The SODs provided signal intelligence support to the SF teams and staff.

First in Asia Association. This organization is a non-profit (IRS 501-C-3) dedicated to supporting the history, lineage, current, and former members of the 1st SFGA. The group raises funds to provide financial and material to support the maintenance and upgrades to the Group's Memorial Wall and Plaza, Memorial Day ceremonies, and providing assistance to Gold Star families and other Group functions.
